Sheffield is a fantastic city for eating and drinking out, particularly when it comes to coffee and cake. This is good news for students, since you’ll need some choice locations for relaxing, revising and studying during your time in the city.

In this guide, we take a look at 30 of the best locations for coffee and cake in the city, across 6 of Sheffield’s postcodes.

Abbeydale Road

Jameson’s Tea Rooms

Strictly more of a specialist in afternoon tea, Jameson’s Tea Rooms is nonetheless a great place to spend a couple of hours with a hot drink a great slice of cake. They also have a lovely craft-style shop just over the road.

Positioned on Abbeydale Road, just a few minutes outside the city centre, the venue is a great place to head to mark a bit more of an occasion. If your family are visiting you at university for example, maybe they could treat you!

Four Corners Canteen

Another one of the great venues on Abbeydale Road’s independent ‘strip’, Four Corners is famed for its changing menu of street food from all around the world. In keeping with this guide, it also offers supreme coffee to boot.

With its rustic interior, the venue makes for an interesting change and is perfectly suited for those searching for an afternoon trip out for coffee with a bit of a difference. Just beware that the menu might tempt you whilst you’re there!

The Rude Shipyard

This lesser-known cafe is actually ideal for students, matching coffee from the famous Sheffield supplier Pollards with a huge selection of books. If you want a hideaway to disappear for a few hours, it’s perfect.

The Rude Shipyard has grown a reputation as one of Sheffield’s more intimate coffee spots; whilst they always have a tasty selection of cakes on offer too. Don’t miss the Guinness cake for a real indulgent treat.

Bragazzis

If you ask anyone who’s lived in Sheffield for a reasonable amount of time, there’s a very good chance they’ll have heard of Braggazis. The Abbeydale Road Italian cafe has earned a fearsome reputation for its quality, authentic coffee.

Couple that with some traditional Italian baked goods and you’re onto an absolute winner. A true Italian coffee house experience in Sheffield.

Forge Bakehouse

A venue that’s been so successful it was recently extended to the premises above, Forge Bakehouse is legendary around the Abbeydale Road area. That’s in no small part thanks to its excellent baking standards.

If you’re prepared to head a little outside the city centre, you won’t be disappointed for making the trip. The cosy cafe upstairs is a great place for a natter, whilst the smaller section of seating downstairs is great for a morning coffee to enjoy as the sun’s rays warm you through the glass.

Amici & Bici

This long-established cycling-themed cafe has enjoyed strong positioning on Abbeydale Road for some time. It was brought under control by new owners in recent years and has since doubled as a restaurant throughout the day and in the evening.

The light interior is great for a spot of cake, of which there is always plenty of choice from the great homemade range on offer. Thanks to the Italian Roots of Amici & Bici, there is also great coffee on offer too.

Broomhill

Upshot Espresso

Firmly established as one of Sheffield’s ‘hip’ coffee venues, Upshot Espresso has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the city’s most reputable locations for a great brew.

Ideally located for students living in the city centre - as well as those willing to make the short trip up from Ecclesall Road - Upshot Espresso has earned a fearsome reputation for its excellent coffee. They pride themselves on only brewing blends that are traceable, sustainable and impeccably roasted.

If you’re feeling peckish, they also sell their famous doughnuts on selected days, with vegan options available. You can also pop in from breakfast and brunch, although this won’t suit all student budgets.

Remo’s

Having recently undergone a major transformation, Remo’s is well-placed to further cement it’s status as one of the cornerstone destinations for great food and coffee in the Broomhilll area. With deals such as £4.95 for a coffee and a slice of cake, the cafe bistro is a great place to spend a couple of hours away from the stresses of university life.

The passion of the Remo’s team for great coffee is evident in the drinks they serve, using Caffe del Moro, one of the oldest coffee companies in the world. This blend combines Arabica beans from the highlands of South and Central America.

Five Rivers Coffee Company

This Vietnamese coffee house is well worth a visit, particularly if you’re living in the Broomhill or Broomhall areas. Specialising in filter coffee from Vietnam, the cafe provides a great chance to experience batch brewing from a different culture.

Their distinctive food and drink is really popular with Sheffield folk and you’ll definitely be able to find something sweet to accompany your distinctive cup of coffee too. Five Rivers’ orange theme relates to a good cause and is part of their drive to raise money for the Kianh Foundation.

Thyme Cafe

Thyme Cafe is a great option if you’ve got guests up for a couple of days and you’re looking for somewhere a little more upmarket for a coffee and slice of cake. Based in Broomhill, the venue is perfect for those living around the city centre.

With a daily changing bistro-style menu that showcases seasonal ingredients, you might find it difficult not to get stuck into something a bit more substantial. If you can resist the temptation though, a sumptuous slice of brownie might just suffice.

City Centre

Steam Yard

On a cold winter’s day, there are few more heartening sights out in Sheffield than Steam Yard’s steaming coffee and welcoming interior. It’s little wonder that they’ve been recognised inside and outside the city for their quality.

In addition to their great range of carefully-sourced coffee, Steam Yard also offers a fantastic range of accompanying baked goods too (including cheesecake brownies and intriguing kronuts).

Tamper Sellers Wheel

Bringing a taste of New Zealand to Sheffield, Tamper Sellers Wheel has become one of the city’s choice destinations for everything from coffee and cake, to a hearty brunch. The place is always packed to the rafters and it’s easy to see why with the quality on offer.

Stop by to try the fantastic selection of tasty coffee on offer; as well as the wonderful array of homemade treats; which are always varied and tasty.

Birdhouse Tea Company

After success with their excellent range of loose leaf teas, Birdhouse Tea Company added their cafe venture to their repertoire in the last few years. Built within a converted former cutlery works, it captures all the prestige of Sheffield’s history in appealing, modern surroundings.

It makes a great place to sample one of their cups of coffee, sourced from Sheffield’s Foundry Coffee Roasters. Or, if tea is more your thing, you’ll be spoilt for choice there too. Don’t miss the handmade baking on offer either.

The Cabin

This pancake, waffle and coffee house is almost every student’s dream. Inspired by Canada, the interior is decorated with authentic furnishings and the walls adorned with iconic imagery from the spectacular Canadian wilderness.

If you’re after a cosy environment to meet your caffeine cravings and satisfy your sweet tooth, it’s sure to hit the mark. It would be remiss not to mention the shakes on offer too, made with Our Cow Molly ice cream.

Alyssum

Actually positioned just outside of the city centre, Alyssum Cafe Bistro is perfect for students in the Crookes area. Specialising in tasty brunches, freshly-prepared breakfasts and freshly-baked cakes that change daily, the location has earned an outstanding reputation.

With speciality coffee on offer, as well as a selection of other great hot and cold beverages, Alyssum is a strong shout for somewhere to socialise in pleasant surroundings.

Ink & Water

A popular location within Sheffield’s West Bar development, Ink & Water is actually split between a coffee house and a design agency. Whilst the latter won’t be relevant to you, it does mean you can expect to enjoy a drink brewed with creative flair.

Pleasingly, their coffee is great and they also offer a strong mixed of baked goods too. You can enjoy your selection from the nice coffee lounge upstairs.

Marmadukes

Bringing visitors well-brewed filter coffee from their selection of chosen roasters, Marmadukes is a great spot to stop for a coffee if you’re out shopping in Sheffield city centre around the Fargate area.

Tucked away on the cobbled backstreet of Norfolk row, the venue is charming and inviting; offering visitors an escape from the hustle and bustle of the high street. Make sure to sample some of the baked goods on offer too, with cakes lovingly produced using lots of local ingredients.

200 Degrees Coffee

One of the newer arrivals to Sheffield’s coffee house scene, 200 Degrees can be found on Division Street, just down from the small Sainsburys. One of 6 coffee houses under the brand name, the business was initially born from a small coffee roasting enterprise in a garage.

The clue of their coffee is in the name, since they roast their beans at a slightly lower temperature than normal (hint: it’s 200 degrees). Matched with one of their excellent cakes, their roast is spot on.

Couch Campo Lane

Having set up shop in Sheffield over 5 years ago, Couch has grown to include two sites in the city, with Ecclesall Road playing home to the other location. Open until the early evening, they specialise in breakfast, brunch, coffee and cake.

If you’re looking for somewhere cosy to unwind, the spacious, industrial-chic interior makes a great spot to relax. Their coffee from specialist Sheffield supplier Smith St Coffee Roasters is worth the visit alone; especially when matched with a sweet treat.

VeroGusto

For a real authentic taste of Italy in the heart of Sheffield, head to the outstanding VeroGusto on Norfolk Row. Tucked away halfway down the cobbles of Norfolk Row, it makes an excellent spot for an authentic coffee and Italian pastry.

Whilst they do offer superb lunch and evening menus, you can just as easily enjoy the atmosphere of this little gem for a couple of hours in the afternoon. The window stools where you’ll drink your coffee make a great spot for people watching.

HowSt

A small independent cafe in the centre of Sheffield, HowSt is particularly well known to Sheffield Hallam students, with the venue very close to the heart of the city centre campus. You can find it just a stone’s throw from the station.

Chocolate brownies and vanilla-themed cake are just a couple of examples of the sweet treats the venue offers. Why not mix a visit with a venture to the Millennium Galleries, which are just up the road.

Tamper Coffee

One of two cafes under the Tamper brand in Sheffield, the perhaps lesser-known Westfield Terrace branch offer something refreshingly different to its sister venue.

Within its more intimate and scaled-back interior, the venue retains the charm you associate with Tamper but offers something different too. Their constantly rotating range of coffees are brewed using a variety of brew methods and can be paired with their supply of baked treats courtesy of Depot Bakery.

Ecclesall Road

MadebyJonty

With their selection of freshly made cakes and bakes - in addition to a great lunch and breakfast menu - MadebyJonty has earned a strong reputation as one of the best places to visit on the Sharrowvale Road strip.

Visit for their wholesome coffee made with 100% Arabica beans (and no fillers) as well as a great selection of teas. You can easily stretch out a morning or afternoon by pairing a visit to some of the great foodie shops in the area.

Eve Kitchen

Famous for their fantastic homemade doughnuts, Eve Kitchen is a dream location for those with a sweet tooth. With a superb range of flavours to try, you’ll have no trouble finding a great accompaniment for your coffee.

The business was started after the owner enjoyed success selling the doughnuts at events in Sheffield. They now spend their days concocting seasonally-themed doughnuts to go alongside tried-and-tested favourites.

Kelham Island

Depot Bakery

One of the mainstays of the Kelham Island revival in the past decade, Depot Bakery is one of the best spots to grab coffee and cake in Sheffield. From sumptuous brownies to intriguing doughnuts, this is a haven for those with a sweet tooth  - and the coffee is excellent as well.

The venue itself is really interesting too, sitting inside a large old warehouse building that’s been modernised with its furnishings; but without losing the charm of the architecture.

Grind Cafe

Opened back in 2010, The Grind Cafe was one of the earlier coffee houses to cotton on to the unlocked potential of the Kelham Island area. Whilst plenty of other competing companies have set up shop in recent times, they’ve managed to maintain their reputation as a great spot.

If you’re looking for a hot drink and a slice of cake, they’re well-placed to assist. The venue was named as the Eat Sheffield winner for Cafe Culture back in 2013.

The Gatehouse

One of the more recent arrivals to the Kelham Island scene, The Gatehouse has a welcoming and intriguing interior, split over two levels. The business serves the triple purpose of cafe, bar and kitchen.

Having worked closely with their local Forge Coffee Roaster, they offer a superb coffee; with knowledgeable baristas in house. Their premium blend is mixed with beans from Columbia, Guatemala and Honduras.

Woodseats

Spoon

Tucked away in Woodseats, some 15 or so minutes’ drive from Sheffield city centre is Spoon - a bistro style cafe that offers a great selection of homemade cakes in addition to their breakfast, lunch and evening menus.

The family-owned venue has earned an excellent reputation with locals and those travelling from a little further field too. Why not mix a visit with a trip out into the neighbouring Peak District, which is only another 10 minutes’ drive away.

Gusto

With great cakes, excellent coffee, moreish milkshakes and a top range of baked goods, Gusto is an absolute dream for students.

If you’re prepared to head a little out of the city centre, a visit to Gusto couples nicely with a walk around Graves Park; which sprawls out to the south-western edge of the city.

That Place

At the time of writing this article, That Place was rated as one of the top 10 best places to eat in Sheffield on TripAdvisor. Not bad for saying there are well over 1,000 other locations to compete with.

So, if you fancy a great coffee and a slice of cake in a welcoming, homely cafe atmosphere, then make the trip out to the venue. You could pair it with a walk through the woods and over the fields in the adjoining Graves Park.
